The Earth (and all the other planets) are round because of gravity pulling all of the matter that they are made from toward the centre of the planet (the centre of mass). In order for this to be stable, the whole surface of the planet has to be equally far from the center, and the only shape where the whole surface is equally far away from its centre is a sphere.
