When babies are inside their mum’s bellies they can’t eat food through their mouths so they get their food from what their mum eats. When mum eats food, she breaks it down in her stomach and then the nutrients from the food go into her blood. The baby can get these nutrients through a tube called a placenta which connects the mum’s blood and the baby’s blood. When the baby is born they don’t need the placenta any more, they can drink milk! So the nurse or midwife cuts off the cord. A little scar is left and this is called your belly button.
