The simple reason is that the fuel – petrol or gasoline – is very cheap while making electric cars that run on electricity is extremely expensive at the moment. Once it becomes cheap to make electric cars, all cars will be electric.

      Some more detailed reasons:
      1. They need batteries but batteries for electric cars can be very expensive. Think of the batteries for your games console… you have to replace them so many times even if you are just pressing a few buttons… now if you have to move a car, it takes lots of energy to do that… Batteries are made of special materials and it costs a lot of money to make one big enough and that can hold enough charge, and charge really fast.
      2. If you want to use an electric car, you need to charge its battery quickly. While it takes seconds to fill your car up with petrol, it can take tens of minutes or hours to charge a big battery completely…. To charge batteries quickly, you need the chargers, just like petrol stations, in many places… these takes time and money to build but no body will build them until they see lots of cars on roads… while nobody will buy electric cars if they can’t see charging points everywhere.. it’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation!
