      The gene that controls red hairness is called Melanocortin 1 receptor and certain forms of this gene are associated with devleoping red hair. Ginger/Red hair is a recessive trait, that means a child inheriting two copies (one from the mother and one from the father) of the red haired forms of this gene will have red hair.
