It stands for doctor of philosophy and is apostgraduate degree which for me had nothing to do with philosophy. It means I can be called Dr Cook now, though I am not a medical doctor.
PhD’s (philosophiae doctor (late for doctor of philosophy) takes about 3-5 years after you’ve done your bachelors degree and sometimes your masters degree. It’s usually a big research project and then you write a big book at the end. It is what you need to become a doctor and most academic jobs.
Although there isn’t much philosophy in science PhDs, the word philosophy means “love of wisdom” in ancient Greek and when you do a PhD you’re researching something so that you can gather more and more knowledge about whatever you’re researching. If you really love gathering all this knowledge (I do!), you end up being very wise about the area you have been researching.
