I prefer to believe God created the universe. Physicists tell us everything started with the big bang, but what about what happened before that? What is the universe contained in? For now, science doesn’t have an exact answer but I’m sure we’ll find out more about the origin of atoms as more experiments are carried out at the Large Hadron Collider.

The big bang is the prevailing theory among scientists, and I think the awesome folk at LHC will find out what actually caused it, hopefully in my lifetime. I’m an atheist so I don’t think it was God, but Gopal’s right in saying that we don’t have an exact answer.

One theory I’ve heard about how the big bang started was that there were these huge membranes floating about, and they crashed into each other. This caused the start of our universe, and the places that were closer, and hit first might have been the places that started galaxies, while the regions that were further apart lead to the gaps between the galaxies. This comes from M-theory, which comes from string theory. String theory says that everything is actually made of tiny strings with different vibrations, that cause different particles.

There is very little that we can say about this event, as it’s hard to get the evidence. It’s generally best of assume the least; an important part of science. So I see no evidence for a god creating it, because it’s far easier for some membranes to hit each other than for a complex creature with intelligence (a god) to think about how to make a universe, and also have the power to do that.
Where did the membranes come from? Maybe they were always there? No one really knows.

Nobody knows for sure,so its down to what you believe, I think the big bang is the most likely explanation.
