Xbox is a games console – it is actually a super powerful computer (more powerful than your home PC for sure!).

It is a special computer that is dedicated to playing games for you. It reads the images and instructions from the dvd you load into it, makes some complex calculations, and sends the images to be displayed to your TV. You need a powerful processor to do this translation from disc to TV because there are many (thousands) images and sound effects to be transmitted every second. The Xbox also loads the game engine – a piece of software that tells it what to images or sounds to send to the TV whenever a button is pressed or some moves are made in the game.

When you press any button on your game pad or move in front of your kinect, even more calculations have to be done by the Xbox.

The Xbox also allows you to play with your friends over the Internet. It does this by sending information about your position and actions in the game to their console which then shows you (your character) on their screen.

The same principle above applies to most games consoles (PlayStation/Wii etc..).
