I was just curious about things – particularly about machines that used electricity – I was fascinated by my CD player (and ended up breaking it while experimenting with it!). I then decided to do the studies that would make me understand how things worked. My dad was a great help – he had studied science and economics as well – he helped me get a headstart on maths, and when I nearly failed chemistry in an internal exam in year 13, he helped me learn it from scratch…and I got an A… could not got here without him!

I chose during my bachelors degree to carry on and do an MSc so I spent a lot of time working in a hotel and saving up enough money to do that. But my parents also helped me a lot and never once questioned what I wanted to do. I don’t think they were surprised really because i’ve always been very enthusiastic about science and learning and it was when I realised I could mix my love of science with my love of linguistics that I realised I was on a winner!
