Excellent question. At fist everything reproduced asexually so there was no distinction between male and female, and organisms just sort of cloned themselves. Sexual reproduction is advantageous because it allows the genetic mixing of two lots of DNA which allows for a greater instance of mutation which speeds the process of evolution up and organisms can adapt quicker, which is useful when the environment is changing quickly.
Parents reproduce offspring who are exact genetic copies. A parent can split into two organisms like in a lot of bacteria or a new organism can form from a small part of the parent organism, some plants can reproduce this way, or an organism can grow straight from an egg without fertilisation which is what some insects do.
